The Son of Sam is an infamous Serial Killer from Brooklyn, NY; who reigned terror in New York City from 1976-1977. He took the NYPD on one of the most publicized manhunts in history, baiting them with letter upon letter promising further destruction. His torment was random, picking up his .44 revolver and hitting the streets, shooting at unsuspecting victims. When finally caught, he explained that his neighbors black dog “Sam” had been possessed by an unknown entity, and coerced him into executing these murders. It’s still uncertain if it was all a hoax, or if the dogs made him do it…

When designing this piece, I wanted to create something shocking. Pairing the true grit, and sometimes unfortunate reality of life, with something high end and luxurious. The reason this shirt is printed on a Dries Van Noten blank is because they are some of the best, high end, plain t-shirts you can find. They scream comfortable cushion. But life isn’t always a comfortable cushion. Sometimes the dark reality is staring us right in the face. But what we do with that reality, how we let it mold us, is what separates us from the crazies. DarkTones is all about juxtaposition, the good with the bad the dark with the light. But at the end of the day, it’s all about how we take it.
